Ah, the feeling of getting your tickets, buying some snacks, and sitting in the theatre quietly awaiting the beginning of the film. I went to watch Pan in hopes of reliving some childhood memories...and because I wanted to see Hugh Jackman (The Wolverine) play a pirate. Now, I can say right now this is not the Peter Pan movie you expected.
Minor Spoilers ahead.
You most likely were not expecting, nuns selling children into slavery to be a plot point. Nor do you remember any part of Neverland as a desert hellscape. Welcome to Pan. Okay, okay, it's not as scary or as violent as all that, but it is a lot more thematic than many of you would have thought.
Spoilers end.
This movie might be better than you would have thought. It is quite a good movie, and it kept me thoroughly entertained. (Hugh Jackman's Blackbeard is flawless.) Prepare to be entertained at the beginning, and feel like it's quite like what you expected. Then, prepare to be horrified, and I mean horrified by your first encounter with the pirates. The pirates aren't bad actors. What I mean is, the pirates are scary. The first time you see them, you may, like me, see similarities between the PG-rated movie you're currently watching and Mad Max. They then introduce some main plot points, and James Hook. Hook really, really reminds me of Han Solo. The story then moves forward. I don't want to have a spoiler-heavy review, so I'm going to stop there. Overall, this movie is good.
