If you're reading this, I assume that you are a person intrigued by the wondrous form of media that is anime. I will attempt to give a few helpful tips and facts about anime.
1. ANIME IS DIFFERENT
I love anime, so don't get me wrong, but some anime will catch you off guard, if you aren't accustom to Japanese culture and/or pop culture. Whether it be a respected and usually serious main character starting to rant about miniskirts, (I'm looking at you, Col. Mustang.), a monster you've never heard of before being essential to the plot of a show, or a fight starting over frog meat. Another thing to be wary of is that you don't think these are cartoons. Most are drawn, yes, but the similarities, for many, end there. So, if your going to start watching anime, expect the unexpected. (If you're watching with children or teens, IMDB has a Parents Guide for a reason.)
2. ANIME IS OF ALMOST ENDLESS VARIETY
Trust me on this. There is an anime for almost anything. There are jazz anime, cooking anime, and time travel anime. It may take you a while, but I'm almost certain you'll find one you like. For this very reason, I've also put a list of some good ones that you can find (as of the posting of this article) on Netflix. They are mostly action, but I'll try to expand my suggestions later.
3. SOME PERSONAL FAVORITES
SWORD ART ONLINE
I really like this show. It's a good mix of sci-fi, fantasy, romance, and comedy. The plot centers around people getting trapped inside a VRMMORPG (Virtual Reality Massively-Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game), where if they die in the game they die in real life. It examines what an experience like that would do to a person, without getting too deeply psychological. It appears lighthearted at first, but, believe me, it gets very dark and dramatic.
FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST & FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST: BROTHERHOOD
The two, ever popular Fullmetal Alchemist series make their way onto this list as two of my all-time favorite Anime. The basic plot is, two alchemist brothers are enveloped in a deep-reaching, occult government conspiracy while trying to restore their former bodies. (Lost in an attempt to bring their mother back to life) These shows are just about as much comedy as they are action-adventure.
GARGANTIA ON THE VURDEROUS PLANET
The show is based around a military space-pilot named Ledo who crashes on an earth that has long been covered by a flood. He gradually tries to adjust to a more primitive and peaceful existence, away from the war he's fought his entire life.
I hope you found this guide helpful. Hopefully, I'll have more suggestions up in a little while. Until then, "Sayonara!"
